      <title>Golden Corral Norovirus Outbreak</title>

      <description>At least 167 residents of the Casper, Wyoming area reported becoming ill with a gastrointestinal illness resembling norovirus after eating at the Golden Corral restaurant in Casper in the first 2 weeks of December, 2012.&amp;nbsp; 

Golden Corral announced a voluntary 24&#45;hour shutdown to sanitize the restaurant on December 13, after public health officials announced that the restaurant was the likely source of the gastrointestinal illness.&amp;nbsp; The local emergency room had reported a spike in illnesses consistent with norovirus infection.&amp;nbsp;</description>

      <title>Subway Norovirus Outbreak &#45; Hartford City, IN</title>

      <description>The week of January 6, 2012 multiple residents of Hartford City, Indiana began to complain of flu&#45;like symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. As the numbers grew, the Blackford County Health Department began an investigation and through patient interviews, learned that many victims had recently consumed food at a local Subway. 

The Subway in question closed its doors for further investigation on Tuesday, January 10 and remained closed as of January 13.&amp;nbsp; 

A total of 90 people have been linked to this outbreak, including two hospitalizations.&amp;nbsp; The exact source of the outbreak has yet to be determined.

      <title>Jimmy John&#8217;s Norovirus Outbreak Valparaiso, Indiana</title>

      <description>On January 12, 2012 health officials in Porter County linked a 60&#45;victim norovirus outbreak to a Jimmy John&#8217;s restaurant in Valparaiso, Indiana.&amp;nbsp; At least 20 of the victims were emergency responders to a train accident that occurred on Friday, January 6.&amp;nbsp; The emergency workers were provided meals prepared by Jimmy John&#8217;s and by Sunday the health department received reports that approximately 20 of them had become ill.&amp;nbsp; The next day more illnesses reported, with consumption of food at Jimmy John&#8217;s being a common theme among those sickened.

The restaurant, located at 1608 East Lincolnway, briefly closed its doors to sanitize the facility, and reopened shortly thereafter. Staff from other locations filled in for regular workers, who were tested for norovirus.

No one was hospitalized in this outbreak.</description>

      <title>Bob Chinn&#8217;s Crab House Norovirus Outbreak</title>

      <description>In January, 2012 the  Cook County Health Department began investigating a 146&#45;person norovirus outbreak linked to Bob Chinn&#8217;s Crab House in Wheeling, Illinois. 

Bob Chinn&#8217;s, which bills itself as the nation&#8217;s fourth busiest restaurant, closed its doors on January 10, after multiple customers called to complain that they had become ill after eating at the restaurant. The restaurant was cleared to reopen the next day following cleaning and sanitizing.</description>

      <title>Di Nolfo&#8217;s Catering and Banquet Norovirus Outbreak</title>

      <description>Three wedding parties held at the Mokena Illinois DiNolfo&#8217;s Catering and Banquet Facility in mid&#45;July, 2010 were apparently exposed to Nororvirus.&amp;nbsp; To date 86 of the 450 guests have been interviewed, and 57 report nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.&amp;nbsp; At least one of the guests has tested positive for Norovirus.&amp;nbsp; The health department has launched an investigation, but no source has yet been identified.

Anita Fowler of Griffith Indiana attended one of the weddings held on July 17, and woke up ill the next day.&amp;nbsp; Her symptoms did not improve over time, and she was forced to seek medical attention for her severe dehydration and other medical issues brought on by her infection.&amp;nbsp; Marler Clark filed suit on her behalf, and is currently assisting others who fell ill.

Foodborne illnesses linked to caterers, carry away delis, and home prepared meals have traditionally been under reported.&amp;nbsp; However the CDC has recently released a 10&#45;year study that documented 833  outbreaks involving food prepared by a caterer (29,738 illnesses, 345 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths), as well as 7,921 outbreaks involving food prepared in a restaurant/deli (101,907 illnesses, 3,309 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths).&amp;nbsp; Food prepared in a private home was responsible for 1,546 reported outbreaks (22,600 illnesses, 1395 hospitalizations, 21 deaths).</description>

      <description>Carrabba&#8217;s, a Lansing, Michigan restaurant, was the source of a Norovirus outbreak that sickened over 400 people in late January and early February, 2006. Barry&#45;Eaton District Health inspectors visited Carrabba’s on January 30, and found six critical violations, four repeat violations, and a number of non&#45;critical violations. Inspectors pointed to sick employees as a possible root cause of the outbreak.</description>

      <description>The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) became aware of an apparent foodborne illness outbreak on May 5, 2005 after several individuals and groups that had ordered and eaten sandwiches from a Grand Rapids, Michigan Blimpie’s restaurant reported becoming ill. At the conclusion of its investigation into the outbreak on May 18, the KCHD announced in a press release that approximately 125 people had become ill with Norovirus after eating food purchased at Blimpie’s.</description>
